The first official day of TechEd 2012 has been busy and fun. It was crammed with information from beginning to end.
The day started with the keynote. In the months leading up to the conference, there were people that thought the keynote should have been given by someone special like Bill Gates or Steve Ballmer being that this is the 20th anniversary of TechEd.
Neither have shown up here in Orlando, but we did have Satya Nadella, President of Server and Tools Business, and Jason Zander, Corporate Vice President of Visual Studios. Neither has the star power or Gates or Ballmer, but they may have been the appropriate choice to present the material.
The keynote had a good balance of sales pitch and solid information, with demos and testimonials thrown in as well. With the help of people like Mark Russinovich, the keynote focused on Windows Server 2012 and Azure. The cloud was just a s prominent this year as last year and is obvious the way things are going.
After the keynote, the Tech Expo opened so we would could mingle with the vendors before the Foundational Sessions. Build on the message of the . I got caught up talking with the Windows Client folks and missed the Foundational Sessions, but it was not wasted time by any means. Windows 8 will be the next OS so I want to understand it as much as I can.
The fun continued after lunch with the Breakout sessions. The first one I went to was Maximizing Windows 7 Performance. I learned some new ways to use some tools that will help to make Windows 7 run better in our environment. A lot of good information here.
The next session was Total Desktop Lockdown. This session showed how to lock down certain computers using Group Policy. It's not something I use everyday but still a lot of good stuff.
The last session of the day was the Network File, Case #53 : Diagnosing Diseases of DNS. Mark Minasi took us step by step through the DNS process and where things could go wrong. Even though I have read some of his books in studying for certifications, I never had been to one of his sessions. He was funny and personable and great at presenting the information. He's on my list as one of the best presenters of all time.
The Tech Expo Welcome Reception was right after the last session. I talked with a lot of vendors and got some good information. There's a lot to learn on the Tech Expo floor too.
All in all it was a great first day of TechEd. I need to get some rest for tomorrow to cram some more information in my head.
