Orlando Tips for TechEd 2012

I was able to get to Orlando on Saturday and already have some information might help out some of you planning on coming to TechEd this Saturday.

First, getting from the airport to your hotel. That was something I was thinking about a couple weeks ago, but totally slipped mind until I was picking up my luggage. Once I got my luggage I rode the escalator down to the ground transportation area of the Orlando Airport.

The options seemed to be either a taxi or a shuttle. I talked to the shuttle guy and he told me it would be a half hour wait and I had to go inside to buy a ticket. Then I went to the taxi stand and ended up taking a taxi.

The plus side to the shuttle is that it's cheaper. The downside is that you are going to stop and a few different hotels before getting to yours and you will probably have to wait sometime before you even leave the airport. The upside of the taxi is that it's a direct route to your hotel, but it's not cheap. From the airport to the Orlando Hilton at the Convention Center, it was $38.75, not including tip. So the downside is obviously the cost, but if you have a few people, it will cost even less than the shuttle.

The other tip I have is that if you have to get around town and have no car, the I-Ride Trolley is a nice option. It goes up and down International Drive and is very affordable. It's $1,25 one way for an adult, but you can get multi-day passes.

To get a multi-day pass, go to their website and by the one that works for you. Print out the Paypal receipt and bring it your first time on the trolley. The driver will take the receipt and give you a card to use for the duration you bought.

If you are going to use the trolley, bookmark their mobile site on your phone. I haven't dug too deep into, but the thing I found useful is the "When's My Next Trolley" section of the "I-Ride Trolley" section. I found this site as I waited just about a half hour, in the pouring rain I might add. It seemed pretty accurate, but I will be testing that more.

That's what I've got for now. Hope that helps some.

I'll see those of you attending TechEd on Monday!
