TechEd Entrance at OCCC |
It was another day to be up bright and early. The first session was on Microsoft DaRT 8. I've used DaRT in the past and it is an incredibly handy tool and was interested to see what the newest version had.
The next session was Windows 8 Security. Even if we don't go to Windows 8, I need to see what it has to offer. They've built on the security in Windows 7 to fight against malware and root kits and other viruses. They're moving in the right direction.
After lunch, I kept things in the Windows 8 vein and went to Windows 8: Malware Resistance. This went hand in hand with the security session I went to earlier. Microsoft is taking the malware threat seriously and doing a lot to combat these attacks.
Rather than going to a session, I connected with someone I met at the Windows Community event. Along with everything else I am doing, I am also studying for the CCNA. I was talking to someone who just happened to be a teacher and they taught networking. IN our conversation he told me he has a great way to teach anyone subnetting in under a half hour.
If you don't know anything about networking, subnetting is amazingly simple and incredibly hard. Once it clicks, it's simple. But getting there is the hard part. This gentleman offered to take time out of his day to show me subnetting. It had been a subject that eluded me.
In under 45 minutes I was able to subnet both IPv4 and IPv6. That half hour I mentioned earlier was just for IPv4, by the way. I was pretty happy about that. I did have to miss one of the most attended sessions, Mark Russinovich's Case of the Unexplained. It was worth it though, to get this break through. I took the rest of the time before the next session to study and reaffirm what I learned.
The very last session of the day, and TechEd 2012, was Microsoft Bitlocker Administration and Monitoring. This was actually my first session on Bitlocker at a TechEd so it was good to see what they had to say. Not the most exciting way to end the conference, but it worked.
I'll have to take the next few days and process everything I learned and make sure to keep in contact with all of the people I met. All in all, this may have been the best TechEd I've attended.
