Cancer is a horrible, evil thing. One person who knows this first hand is author Michael King. He has fought the battle against colon cancer and lived to tell about it. King is using his experiences with colon cancer to help others. This is where his latest novel, A Thousand Sleepless Nights comes in to play.
A Thousand Sleepless Nights tells us the story of Nena and Jim Hutching as they traverse the bumpy road of life. Their three kids are scattered across the country filled with varying bitterness. Their horse farm is failing. And now a bombshell has been dropped in Nena's lap.
Nena is diagnosed with colon cancer. While the doctors are doing everything they can to help Nena fight, she has to figure out a way to handle everything that's coming her way. Can her children overcome the years of bitterness and problems in their own lives to help Nena fight this battle for her life?
While A Thousand Sleepless Nights is fiction, Michael King draws from his experiences. He knows what it is to be scared, to have nowhere to turn but God. This brings a sense of realism to the story that would be hard to pull off otherwise.
It's not just the situations dealing with cancer, though that is incredibly powerful in itself. It's the family dynamic with Nena and Jim and their kids as well as Jim and Nena dealing with their respective families when they were younger. King brings real issues to the table adding them in the mix of dealing with cancer, just like real life.
A Thousand Sleepless Nights is more than a story of a family dealing with cancer. It is a story of hope and courage. We may not be able to choose everything that happens in our lives, but we can choose how to handle them.
King reminds us that we have a place to run and hide in the arms of God. King reminds us that even as the waves crash around and all seems lost, God is the Rock where we can stand. King reminds us that God has taken the victory from the grave and the sting from death. King reminds us that Christ is the victor and death is defeated. Cancer is ultimately defeated.
Michael King has teamed up with the Colon Cancer Alliance and he gives them a portion of every sale of A Thousand Sleepless Nights through 2012. King also has some free stuff for anyone buying the book this first week it comes out. It's actually pretty generous and will help people going through any struggle, not just cancer. Buy the book, help a great cause, and get blessed as well. What a bargain!
A Thousand Sleepless Nights is moving and griping and for anyone who likes a well told story. There is drama and suspense, but most of all there is hope.
