It's the third and final day of the CSFF Blog Tour for Eye of the Sword. There has been more discussion on the other blogs than I thought would happen. I suggest you check them out.
Yesterday I talked about a scene that made me think of how we need to remember who we are in Christ. The main character, Trevin, thought much lower of himself than was actual real. We fall into that as well.
There was another scene after this one that reminded how we react after we fail. In this scene Trevin is captured by on of the big baddies and he reverts back to his old ways. He grovels and offers himself up as a spy again. He turns his back on those that trust him in a moment of weakness.
He beats himself up for this and dwells in his self pity. This all took place after the scene with the Eye of the Sword, so maybe he should have known better. To find out if he stays in self condemnation, you'll have to read the book, but I've seen many people live their life that way.
Knowing who we are in Christ is essential in times when we screw up. We need to remember that so we can get back up, learn from our mistake, and move forward. Too many times we let the mistakes of our past define who we are and we dwell on that rather than moving forward.
As I was reading this scene with Trevin spouting nonsense to his enemy, I was reminded of people I know that have walked away from God because of mistakes they have made. They feel like they are unforgivable. just as Trevin did in this moment. It was a warning to me that I need to stay on guard and not condemn myself by learn and move on. It is hard to do, but something that's very important.

Shane, I really like the way you dug out spiritual meaning.
ReplyDeleteI'm not convinced that Trevin has come to the point where he's "in Christ." I think that's his future, but I suspect, because of the way he reacted when he was captured, that he has a way to go before he experience what we know as redemption. That alone will free him from the guilt he struggles with.
But who know. I may be unduly hopeful. I've been known to assume a Christian slant is coming when in fact it isn't.
Either way, your points are right on, and it was refreshing to see you reading with that mindset.
Thanks for a great group of posts.
Becky
Thanks Becky. Trevin certainly has a long way to go and I look forward to seeing what happens in book three. I honestly wasn't looking for any Christian slant but these two just jumped at me. I think God is trying to tell me something. Normally I just read a book for the story and don't think too deep until maybe after I'm done.
DeleteAmen, Shane. (You too, Becky!)
ReplyDeleteThanks Keanan. It's something I need to work on a lot.
